What Does Doulos Mean?

Doulos is a Greek word from the New Testament, which means servant or bond slave.

Why Did You Name Your Company That?

That’s a threefold answer. First, it represents the heart of this whole operation. Our heart is to serve God with our whole mind, heart and strength, and we’ve devoted Doulos Clothing to do the same.

Second, as two college kids inspired by all God’s given us, we wanted to make sweet, stylish clothing for those who love to serve God as well.

Most importantly, we wanted the name of our company to be an avenue to talk about our Heavenly Father. Wear your heart on your sleeve. Tell people what that Greek word means to you. Tell them an aspect about the life of service and love that you hold dear to your heart.

Where Did This Idea Come From?

In January 2007, I (Ryan) visited Orlando, FL and discovered a small but powerful wristband that seemed to unite the college believers at the University of Central Florida. It scripted “Live in Love” across a leather band. Immediately after arriving in Orlando, I was given the wristband and – despite not knowing most of the youth – I felt connected to my newfound Floridian brothers and sisters in Christ. Whenever I was asked about the wristband, it gave me the opportunity to genuinely meet that person and gave him room to talk about the things that matter most in my life.

After returning home from Florida, I was inspired by how clothing could unite people to God and to one another. It was then that I decided to make a Christian clothing company. The question was now, how would I accomplish this? I had little experience in graphic design and as these doubtful thoughts invaded my mind hope seemed to fade as reality set in.

After a long, tiring day, I was about to close my eyes to sleep when I was inspired to call my best friend Steven from Tucson, AZ to catch up on life. As our conversation deepened Steve explained that he wanted to focus the rest of his studies on graphic design. Immediately after Steve broke this news to me I told Steve all about my ideas for the soon-to-be Doulos.

Steve went completely silent: ”I don't belive it, I’ve wanted to do this for a long time.”

At the end of the excited conversation that had continued into the wee hours of the night, Steve suggested the name “Doulos,” signifying the heart of the company. This was the conception of Doulos Clothing.

How Has God Provided For You?

James 3:17- "But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle and easy to be intreated…”

Everything that has happened with this company has been so easy to be intreated God has gone above and beyond for us as we’ve put Him first.

We have connections from American Apparel to small-town leather workers. We also have distributors across the nation so you can get what you want ASAP. Deals upon deals have fell in our lap so we get the most for our money. This translates to the pricing of our high quality apparel. We get all giddy giving our wearers great deals on great clothes. We simply love serving God and His kids. Because of this He brings the deliverance, just like He promised (Psalm 37:4).

Here’s the verse that puts all of what God has provided for us in a simple, beautiful nutshell…

Ephesians 3:20- Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.

Why Wear Doulos?

What do you love? Do you like sports, dancing, music, or maybe armadillos? Well whatever you love, you most likely, wear it.

But how much greater is God than your greatest earthly passion? He made that passion/sport/dance/armadillo for you! Enjoy what God gave you but never forget the Creator of it all and don’t be afraid to wear Him on your sleeve.

“So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth; it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.”

Doulos is designed to keep the Word in your mind and to inspire research of the scriptures. It’s inevitable that many people will look at your Doulos clothing and ask you what it means. Most people aren’t going to know what many of these designs mean. This turns in to a golden opportunity to give God’s matchless Word to those who are searching for some substance, truth, and love.

As ambassadors for Christ we want to live Doulos lifestyles. We want to be living examples of I Peter 2:15-16.

It is God’s will that we live honestly, rightly, and freely as servants for Him. We shine as lights and in doing good, silence the critics of our Lord. Wear Doulos and represent who you are, who you love and Who you serve.
